Authorities in Macao and Zhuhai introduced a smart immigration system at the Hengqin Port on Thursday to speed up cross-border travel. Drivers who register can now clear immigration using only fingerprint and facial scans instead of showing documents.
The new service applies to one-stop joint inspection lanes at the port linking Macao with the Guangdong-Macao In-Depth Cooperation Zone in Hengqin. It was developed by public security and immigration authorities from Macao and Zhuhai along with the Hengqin zone administration.
Registered drivers complete clearance through biometric checks alone. The Macao SAR Public Security Police Force said the system removes the need to present physical documents.
The technology first appeared in passenger channels at the port in November 2025. By April 30 more than 280,000 people had signed up. Macao resident Mr Tong noted the change makes family trips to Hengqin for leisure and meals much easier.
