Mossos d'Esquadra have arrested a man suspected of fatally stabbing a woman in a street in Esplugues de Llobregat on Saturday morning. The incident occurred around 11 a.m. on Joan Miró street, near Hospital Sant Joan de Déu. Investigation sources currently rule out gender-based violence, though one outlet probes it as possible.
A man has been arrested as a suspect for killing a woman today with a large knife in a public street in Esplugues de Llobregat, a Barcelona municipality. Mossos d'Esquadra stated in a press release that the incident occurred around 11 a.m., following a 112 emergency call reporting a man had seriously injured the woman and fled.
The attacker stabbed the victim several times on Joan Miró street, near Hospital Sant Joan de Déu. Neighbors reported the man had previously displayed a large knife and appeared nervous. Mossos units and the Sistema de Emergencias Médicas (SEM) responded, but the woman died.
After the attack, the suspect fled but was located and arrested in a bordering area between Esplugues and Barcelona. The Mossos' División de Investigación Criminal (DIC) is leading the investigation, under judicial secrecy. Sources close to the probe are checking any link between the detainee and victim, currently ruling out gender-based violence, and examining if another man lightly injured nearby was also attacked by him.
Esplugues town hall has condemned the murder and voiced "preocupación por este hecho grave", affecting "convivencia y la seguridad ciudadana". The council deeply regrets "la muerte violenta de una persona en la ciudad" and urges prudence to avoid unverified information.
