A 50-year-old man has allegedly killed his 43-year-old ex-partner in a home in Seseña (Toledo) this Thursday and then taken his own life. The incident followed an argument with the victim's son, who was injured and hospitalized. Both were registered in the VioGén system.

The Guardia Civil responded around 5:40 a.m. in Seseña after a neighbor reported an assault between two men. They found a 20-year-old youth injured under a van and took him to Toledo University Hospital.

Shortly after, at 6:00 a.m., a woman called for help from a nearby home, but the patrol found no one. After the son's statement at the hospital, officers returned to the apartment and discovered Melissa's body, Venezuelan nationality, with stab wounds, and the aggressor, also Venezuelan, hanged.

The victim had reported the man at the end of January for psychological abuse and humiliations since November 2024, when divorce proceedings began. He was detained then and rearrested on April 12 for breaching a restraining order. Both were in the VioGén system, with low risk for her, and no active judicial measures.

Castilla-La Mancha president Emiliano García-Page expressed his "pain, rage, and indignation" at this possible macho murder. "We can never get used to this barbarity," he stated on social media. Seseña mayor Jaime de Hita was dismayed, and Equality counselor Sara Simón offered condolences to the family.

If confirmed, it would be the 17th gender violence victim in 2026 and the 1,360th since 2003.

ما يقوله الناس

Discussions on X condemn the killing as gender-based violence and the first femicide in Castilla-La Mancha in 2026. Users criticize the VioGén system's failure despite the victim's low-risk classification and prior complaints. Some highlight the Venezuelan nationality of both victim and perpetrator, with sentiments ranging from calls for better protection to frustration over policy effectiveness.
