Nico Hulkenberg retires from Barcelona GP after gravel incident

Nico Hulkenberg retired from the Barcelona Grand Prix on lap 28 after gravel from Liam Lawson's car triggered a mechanical failure in his Audi. The incident ended his chance at a first points finish of the 2026 season.

Hulkenberg was attempting to overtake Lawson for ninth place when the Racing Bulls driver ran a wheel through the gravel at Turn 12. Debris from that moment struck the Audi, damaging the mirror and nosecone before activating an emergency shutdown that left the car powerless.

The 38-year-old German described the failure as unprecedented in his career. “I've never seen or heard about this, to be honest,” Hulkenberg said. “Very unlucky. Strange, the timing of that.”

Lawson went on to finish eighth and claimed he had no idea his actions had caused the retirement until informed afterward. “You serious? No way, that’s so unfortunate,” he said.

The result leaves Audi with points only from Gabriel Bortoleto’s ninth-place finish in Melbourne. Two other cars also retired late in the race when Kimi Antonelli suffered an engine failure and Charles Leclerc lost power steering.
