Reyes Maroto wins PSOE primaries and will run again for Madrid mayor

Reyes Maroto defeated Enma López in Sunday’s PSOE primaries to select the candidate for Madrid mayor. The former industry minister and current socialist spokesperson will face José Luis Martínez-Almeida in the 2027 municipal elections.

Maroto secured 55.4 % of the vote against 44.59 % for López, according to provisional results. López conceded defeat on Twitter and wished her rival success for the 2027 elections.

Maroto’s win confirms the party’s original plan, pairing her candidacy with that of Óscar López for the regional presidency of Madrid. Both candidates agreed on priorities such as housing, cleanliness and mobility, yet Maroto defended continuity while López sought renewal.

Maroto gathered 1,376 endorsements compared with 1,028 for López. In Sunday’s in-person vote she received 1,045 ballots against 841. The former minister enjoyed support from most socialist councillors and the party structure in the capital.
