يتحدى بحث جديد الاعتقاد الشائع بأن نبرة الصوت المبحوح (vocal fry) سمة كلامية تقتصر في الغالب على الشابات. وقد أظهر التحليل الصوتي واختبارات الاستماع أن جودة الصوت الخشن تحدث بشكل متكرر أكثر لدى الرجال وتزداد مع التقدم في العمر.

قادت جين براون من جامعة ماكغيل الدراسة بعد جمع عينات صوتية من 49 بالغاً كندياً عبر الإنترنت. قام الباحثون بقياس علامات صوتية مثل عدم الانتظام في الترددات الأساسية ودرجة الانفاس في الصوت، مما كشف عن معدلات أعلى للصوت المبحوح بين المتحدثين الذكور. كما ارتفعت حدة هذا الصوت باطراد مع تقدم المتحدثين في العمر، وهو ما يتناقض مع الصورة النمطية التي تربط هذه السمة بالشباب والأنوثة.
