Sheinbaum government presents plan to boost natural gas production

Energy Secretary Luz Elena González Escobar announced a plan to increase natural gas production and cut import dependency, alongside President Claudia Sheinbaum. The initiative features a technical committee for sustainable practices and speeds up renewables to 38% by 2030.

Energy Secretary Luz Elena González Escobar presented Mexico's government project to bolster energy security by ramping up natural gas production. Alongside President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, she noted that Mexico consumes 9 billion cubic feet of natural gas daily, with Pemex producing 2.3 billion and importing 6.8 billion, mainly from the United States.

The plan aims to cut the 75% import reliance, projecting output to exceed 8 billion cubic feet daily by 2035 via unconventional fields. President Sheinbaum stressed: “If we are to exploit unconventional gas, it must be sustainable, minimizing environmental impacts to the maximum.”

A Technical Scientific Committee of water, geology, and environment experts will recommend technologies to reduce effects on soils and aquifers. Pemex CEO Víctor Rodríguez Padilla highlighted prospective resources over 141 trillion cubic feet in basins like Burgos, Sabinas, and Tampico-Misantla.

The initiative also hastens the Energy Transition Plan to lift renewables in electricity generation from 24% now to 38% by 2030, as gas demand rises 30% by the end of the term due to new industrial and fertilizer projects.
