The Swiss army will deploy around 4000 troops on its territory to bolster security for the G7 summit scheduled from 15 to 17 June in Evian-les-Bains, France.
The summit will bring together leaders of the world’s major economies, including US President Donald Trump, on the shores of Lake Geneva. The immediate proximity to the Swiss border requires close coordination between civil and military authorities. Switzerland decided on this subsidiary army deployment after the Federal Council and Parliament approved the measure. The troops will protect sensitive infrastructure such as Geneva Airport, monitor borders and secure transport routes as well as Lake Geneva. The Swiss Air Force will also strengthen its airspace surveillance. Airspace restrictions are planned from 10 to 19 June, along with increased anti-drone capabilities and protection against nuclear, biological and chemical threats.
