The defense of former president José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero has filed briefs before Judge José Luis Calama to protect his privacy after leaks and to limit the scope of the Plus Ultra case.
Lawyer Víctor Moreno Catena criticized the investigating judge for allowing Zapatero's personal agendas and messages with secretary Gertrudis Alcázar to leak. He requested a separate expurgation proceeding to remove data unrelated to the investigation and asked that the UDEF report on activities in Bolivia be returned for exceeding the May 18 2026 indictment order.
The defense argued that a general case is not appropriate and sought to bar police from using mass-obtained information to probe other activities. It also appealed the addition of popular accusations to the jewels proceeding.
Separately, Judge Calama offered the Tax Agency the chance to join as an injured party in the case over the jewels valued at 1.3 million euros found in the search of Zapatero's office. The former president requested more time to prove their origin.
