South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff confirmed North Korea launched an unidentified projectile from the Pyongyang area on Tuesday. The projectile, believed fired in the morning, apparently failed shortly after. The launch came a day after President Lee Jae-myung expressed regret over drone flights by South Korean individuals into the North.

South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) will advance the deployment of a homegrown Low-Altitude Missile Defense (LAMD) system, akin to Israel's Iron Dome, by two years to 2029 to counter North Korean long-range artillery threats. The government plans to invest 842 billion won (US$558 million) by 2030. The decision was approved at a pan-government committee on defense projects.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un oversaw the test-firing of long-range surface-to-air missiles on Wednesday at a site near the country's east coast, state media KCNA reported on Thursday. The test aimed to assess technology for developing a new type of high-altitude missile and successfully destroyed airborne targets 200 km away.

President Lee Jae-myung called on Friday for officials to make preemptive efforts to reduce tensions with North Korea, saying Seoul needs to patiently seek a path to restore trust with Pyongyang.
