33-year-old man shot dead in public in Coronel

A 33-year-old man was shot dead in a public street in Coronel, Biobío Region, on Saturday afternoon. The killing followed a fight where the victim tried to flee but was hit by shots to the head and torso. No arrests have been made, marking the 95th homicide in the region this year.

On Saturday around midday, in the Villa Los Jardines sector of Coronel, a 33-year-old man was attacked and killed in Isabel Riquelme passage, steps from a plaza. Preliminary details indicate the victim was involved in a fight and, while trying to seek shelter in a nearby home, was chased by unknowns who shot him at least five times, leading to his death on site.

Carabineros personnel cordoned off the area right away, as the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Team Against Organized Crime and Homicides (ECOH) directed investigations to the Homicide Brigade and the PDI's Criminalistics Laboratory. Prosecutor Carolina Molina is overseeing the case.

Subprefect Enrique Guzmán Vera, head of the Concepción Homicide Brigade, stated that around 12:45 p.m., "the victim, while walking through the Los Jardines neighborhood, was approached by an unknown individual who, armed with a firearm, shot him multiple times, causing his death at the scene." Efforts continue to clarify the sequence, motives, and the perpetrator's identity, aided by experts and the local Criminal Investigation Brigade.

The victim was identified as Cristián Estuardo Campos, with prior records for armed robbery, weapons and drug law violations, and a conviction for burglary in an uninhabited place. At the time of the incident, he was facing charges under the Law 20.000 on drugs and was under total house arrest.

The event alarmed residents, who expressed concerns over repeated gunfire, fights, and drug sales in the vicinity. This homicide brings the total to 95 in the Biobío Region for 2025, with no arrests reported yet.
