Trent Giles, an Australian professional mechanic, converted his 2017 BMW R9T Scrambler into a custom off-road rally machine after finding the stock suspension and seat inadequate for adventure rides near Brisbane.
Giles fitted KTM450SX front forks with resprung internals and added a custom rear shock to increase travel. He also installed custom wheels from Woody’s, including a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear, along with machined spacers to ensure proper wheel alignment.
To test the upgrades, Giles entered the Sunraysia Safari, a four-day cross-country rally in outback New South Wales. He later competed in the two-day Condo 750 navigational rally in Condobolin, New South Wales, which he won in 2024.
BMW Australia provided Giles with an ex-fleet G/S model, which he raced in the Tatts Finke Desert Race in early June 2026, though he did not finish. Giles has said he plans to organize his own road book rally event.
