Kimi Antonelli has taken the Formula 1 drivers' standings lead with back-to-back wins in China and Japan, becoming the youngest championship leader in history and pressuring Mercedes teammate George Russell. Sky Sports F1 analyst Martin Brundle said Russell should be concerned about the Italian teenager's pace. Nigel Mansell urged Russell to stamp his authority, while Russell expressed confidence after the April break ahead of the Miami Grand Prix.
Mercedes' Kimi Antonelli leads the drivers' standings by nine points over George Russell heading into the Miami Grand Prix from May 1-3 at Hard Rock Stadium. The 19-year-old Italian secured his second consecutive victory at the Japanese Grand Prix, following a win in China. Russell opened the season with victories in the Australian Grand Prix and Chinese sprint race but finished second in the Chinese Grand Prix and fourth in Japan amid troublesome weekends. An unexpected five-week break followed due to the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia races, providing a reset period before Miami. Antonelli's rapid rise has drawn commentary from F1 legends. On the Sky Sports F1 Show, Martin Brundle stated, 'If I were George, I'd be more concerned after three races than I was at the beginning of the season.' Brundle praised Antonelli's qualifying pace, race performance and recovery from a crash in Melbourne, noting, 'He looked the real deal.' 1992 champion Nigel Mansell echoed the sentiment, telling Sky Sports F1, 'You've got to lead by incredible focus... you have to stamp the authority.' Mansell recalled swapping cars with teammate Riccardo Patrese in 1992 to prove his edge, finishing 1.5 seconds quicker in Patrese's car. Despite the pressure, Russell remains upbeat. In an interview with IWC Schaffhausen at Watches and Wonders 2026 in Geneva, he said, 'This small mini break has been a good reset, and I'm ready to go for it again.' He highlighted Mercedes' strong package and his fondness for Miami's fast, flowing circuit with overtaking opportunities.
