Russell opened the season with victories in the Australian Grand Prix and Chinese sprint race but finished second in the Chinese Grand Prix and fourth in Japan amid troublesome weekends. An unexpected five-week break followed due to the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia races, providing a reset period before Miami. Antonelli's rapid rise has drawn commentary from F1 legends. On the Sky Sports F1 Show, Martin Brundle stated, 'If I were George, I'd be more concerned after three races than I was at the beginning of the season.' Brundle praised Antonelli's qualifying pace, race performance and recovery from a crash in Melbourne, noting, 'He looked the real deal.' 1992 champion Nigel Mansell echoed the sentiment, telling Sky Sports F1, 'You've got to lead by incredible focus... you have to stamp the authority.'
