Masters of Albion announces April 22 release date

Peter Molyneux's final game, Masters of Albion, has revealed a release date of April 22 alongside a new trailer. The open-world god game draws from his past works like Dungeon Keeper and Fable. Developed by 22cans, it blends strategy, simulation, and defense elements.

Peter Molyneux, a veteran game designer known for pioneering the god game genre with titles such as Populous, Black & White, and Dungeon Keeper, has announced that Masters of Albion will launch on April 22. The game, described as his last project, aims to revitalize the genre by combining strategy, simulation, town management, and real-time defense, offering players freedom to create or destroy.

Developer 22cans, founded by Molyneux and including original staff from Media Molecule, shared a statement: "Blending strategy, simulation, town management, and real-time defence, the game gives players extraordinary freedom to play the game the way they want to play it. Taking inspiration from some of Peter’s classic titles, Masters of Albion is a return to form, blending gameplay mechanics from multiple genres... to reinvigorate the god game."

Molyneux himself called it the culmination of his career: "Masters of Albion is the culmination of my life’s work, a game that owes so much to titles like Dungeon Keeper, Black & White, and Fable. It’s a totally unique game that we hope will delight players, a game that brings God Games into the modern gaming landscape and puts the genre firmly back on the map."

The announcement coincides with the retirement of the Peter Molydeux Twitter parody account, created in 2009 by Adam Capone to spoof Molyneux's ambitious promises. Capone, recently laid off from Ubisoft's Halifax studio, noted the timing felt right given Molyneux's declaration of this as his final game. He praised Molyneux's unfiltered enthusiasm, contrasting it with today's rehearsed pitches.

Masters of Albion features contributions from industry veterans like LittleBigPlanet director Mark Healey and Black & White 2 designer Iain Wright. Molyneux has acknowledged past overpromises, such as with Curiosity and the canceled Project Milo in 2010, labeling this project a 'redemption title.' The god game genre has waned in recent years, and fans hope this release delivers on its promises, especially after setbacks like Molyneux's previous blockchain sim.
