Wishfully Studios has revealed that Planet of Lana 2: Children of the Leaf will launch on March 5 across multiple platforms, including PC, Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch. A demo will be available from February 11 on select systems. The sequel builds on the original's charm with enhanced puzzles, new environments, and upgraded companion abilities.
The announcement for Planet of Lana 2: Children of the Leaf came on February 5, highlighting its expansion from the 2023 original, which took about five hours to complete. This sequel, developed by Wishfully Studios in Gothenburg, Sweden, doubles the length to roughly 8-10 hours and introduces more complex mechanics without requiring prior playthrough of the first game.
Creative director and co-studio head Adam Stjärnljus explained the motivation: "During [the original] Planet of Lana, we first aimed to only create one stand-alone game... There was just so much to tell about Lana and Mui's story, as well as the history of the people and the planet of Novo." Lana, now older, features more fluid and responsive movement, while her companion Mui gains powers to override machines, hypnotize creatures, and enable deeper collaboration in stealth and puzzles.
Hands-on previews showcase new underwater sections, where players control small fish to navigate and distract electric sea beasts guarding healing seaweed near Lana's village of Tailo. Mui's aversion to water adds challenges, requiring creative transport solutions, with air pockets for breath management. Snowy mountainsides demand precise platforming against harsh winds, and a new creature—a white pom-pom being—leaves flammable ash trails to burn webs or retract pillars, emphasizing timing.
Industrial areas introduce patrolling machines and cameras, where Mui disrupts surveillance and players manipulate light beams to trap foes. The game's Ghibli-inspired art, emotive score by Takeshi Furukawa, and made-up language convey emotion through music, animation, and body language. Stjärnljus noted: "We just love working with limitations! It really forces us to boil everything down to the essentials."
Platforms include PC via Steam, Xbox Series X/S with Game Pass, PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and Switch 2. The demo launches February 11 on Steam, Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PS4, with Nintendo versions forthcoming. The story follows Lana and Mui as "greed and power divide the tribes," fighting for their world's soul.
