Actress and model Vera Valdez, recognized as Brazil's first top model, died on Wednesday, January 14, 2026, at age 89 in São Paulo. The Teatro Oficina announced her passing, where she starred in numerous productions. She had been battling pulmonary insufficiency complications and recently suffered a domestic accident.
Vera Valdez, born Vera Barreto Leite in 1936 in Rio de Janeiro to a family of diplomats and theater artists, was influenced early by her mother, actress Maria Barreto Leite. At 15 in 1952, she moved to Paris, modeling for Elsa Schiaparelli and then Christian Dior and Victoire Doutreleau. In 1954, at 17, she was selected by Coco Chanel for her comeback show after a 14-year hiatus, alongside Marie-Hélène Arnaud. Though fired for absences, she returned to model for Chanel in 1971.
Back in Brazil in the 1950s, she married actor Luís Linhares, with whom she had daughter Paula, divorcing after posing nude for a magazine. In the 1960s, she dated filmmakers Louis Malle and Roger Vadim in France and married photographer Pedro de Moraes, son of Vinícius de Moraes, having daughter Mariana de Moraes, also an actress. She was a founder of TV Globo on April 26, 1965, and appeared in films like 'The Naked Man' (1968) by Roberto Santos and 'The Cariocas' (1966) by Walter Hugo Khouri.
In the 1970s, she faced military regime persecution: arrested for cocaine possession, tortured at Doi-Codi, and exiled with help from Bernardo Bertolucci and Louis Malle, returning in 1982 under the Amnesty Law. In the 1980s, she joined Teatro Oficina, starring in plays like 'The Bacchae', 'The Sertões', 'Cacilda!!!', 'Knife in the Flesh', and 'King of the Candle' (2018). Her final role was in 2024's 'Aunt Virginia' with Vera Holtz. Two years ago, she led 'Human Voices', an adaptation of Jean Cocteau's 'The Human Voice'.
Teatro Oficina's social media note read: 'This afternoon Vera passed. Fly, Vera! Etherna! So much love for this mannequin'. Artists like Debora Bloch and Matheus Nachtergaele mourned her. Valdez leaves two daughters, a granddaughter, and four great-grandchildren. The wake is set for Thursday afternoon, January 15, in central São Paulo.
