On Christmas Day, just before noon, police were alerted to a villa in the Sanden area of Boden following a suspected assault. There, a woman in her 50s was found dead, murdered with a blunt instrument. Two other people were injured and taken to hospital, where their conditions are described as stable by police.
The suspected perpetrator, a man in his 20s who was known to police from before, attacked officers upon their arrival and was shot dead with warning shots. According to Detective Inspector P-O Andersson of Luleå police, there is no known connection between the perpetrator and the victims, and the motive remains unclear. "We are piecing together a puzzle to understand what happened," Andersson says. One of the injured has been interviewed and provided a clear account of the events.
The woman worked as a civilian employee with administrative duties at Norrbotten Regiment I 19 within the Swedish Armed Forces. Her colleagues are deeply mourning her. "Completely terrible. I was shocked and deeply saddened when I heard what happened," says Anna Källström, communications chief at the regiment. The Armed Forces have activated crisis support, will fly flags at half-mast on December 27, and plan a memorial service after the Epiphany holidays.
The local community in the quiet villa area, home to retirees and young families, is in shock. Neighbor Ove Enberg, 69, who knew the woman for over ten years, describes her as positive and friendly. "She was a wonderful woman. So positive, hardworking, and pleasant," he says. The Swedish Church and Boden municipality are offering crisis support, and police are seeking tips from witnesses.
The incident is being investigated as murder and attempted murder, while the police shooting is under separate review.
