Connor Storrie shares Russian accent challenges for Heated Rivalry

In a recent podcast interview, Connor Storrie revealed the intense preparation required to master a Russian accent for his role as Ilya Rozanov in HBO Max's Heated Rivalry. The actor described learning the language as the most daunting aspect of filming the show's first season. His efforts paid off with praise for a key monologue in episode 5.

Connor Storrie, who portrays Russian hockey player Ilya Rozanov in the HBO Max series Heated Rivalry, faced significant hurdles while preparing for season 1. Beyond improving his ice-skating to convincingly play a professional athlete, Storrie highlighted mastering Russian as "the most scary thing ever."

During an appearance on Owen Thiele's "In Your Dreams" podcast, the Texas-born actor explained that he connected with a dialect coach immediately after signing his contract. He had just over a week—or possibly a week and a half—to prepare before traveling to the set in Ontario, Canada. "For a week, or I think it was maybe a week and a half, before I left, I was doing Russian lessons, and then all the way through a month and a half of the shooting, I had Russian lessons every single day," Storrie recalled.

Reflecting on the process, he noted the focus on authenticity: "It's funny because everyone talks about, you know, mine and [Hudson Williams'] chemistry, the characters and stuff... I'm like, I was f**king focused on sounding Russian when I speak Russian, and then not looking like a total idiot on skates."

Storrie's dedication shone in episode 5, titled "I'll Believe in Anything," where he delivered a five-minute monologue entirely in Russian. The performance drew acclaim from critics, viewers, and Russian-speaking fans. One fan tweeted on December 19, 2025: "the fact that as a russian i understood the entire ilya monologue in russian with zero issues says a lot... connor nailed it perfectly."

Storrie and co-star Hudson Williams, who plays the character's romantic interest, were honored as TVLine's Performers of the Week for their work in the season 1 finale on December 26. The series has been a smash hit, blending sports drama with personal stories.
