PP leader Alberto Núñez Feijóo told the Círculo de Empresarios Vascos that medical leaves are a cancer with massive fraud above 4 or 5 percent. He provided no data to support the claims.
Feijóo compared 2018 and 2026 leave figures without accounting for the rise in employed workers from 19 to 22.5 million. The PP leader backed cutting salaries and benefits for workers on leave with or without union agreement.
Sources note that temporary incapacity is regulated by the General Social Security Law. No pay applies on days 1-3, 60 percent from day 4 to 20, and 75 percent from day 21 onward.
The PP already applied similar measures under Rajoy in 2012, including dismissal for absenteeism. Feijóo has tied these positions to his economic policy since taking party leadership.
