Pierre Gasly and Alpine will learn on Friday whether the French driver's Monaco Grand Prix penalties will be overturned. The FIA stewards admitted new evidence on Thursday showing an error in the pitlane speed measurement system.
Gasly crossed the finish line third in Monaco but received two five-second penalties for pitlane speeding that dropped him to seventh. Alpine requested a right of review, citing data from Formula One Management that the distance measuring system was inaccurate and overestimated the speed of his car.
On Thursday the stewards ruled the request admissible after a video conference attended by most teams. The hearing began that afternoon, but a final decision is not expected before Friday morning in Barcelona.
Gasly described the demotion as the hardest sporting moment of his career. He said the team had worked hard to present the new evidence and that he remained proud of Alpine's performance despite the result.
The review could affect other drivers penalised in the same race, including Mercedes driver George Russell.
