DeepL blev grundlagt i 2017 i Kölns Ehrenfeld-kvarter og blev hurtigt en global AI-oversættelsestjeneste, der udfordrer Google Translate. Virksomheden tiltrak amerikanske venturekapitalister som Benchmark, IVP og Index Ventures og blev engang betragtet som Tysklands mest værdifulde AI-startup.

Administrerende direktør Jarek Kutylowski fremhæver mulighederne for Tyskland og Europa inden for AI. "Det er ikke for sent for Tyskland og Europa at spille en førende rolle i AI-sektoren," sagde han til Handelsblatt. Væksten fortsætter trods konkurrencen fra OpenAI.

I slutningen af 2025 rapporterede Bloomberg, at DeepL overvejer en børsnotering (IPO) i USA i 2026 med et mål om en værdiansættelse på op til fem milliarder dollars.
