On his first official day, Cousins praised Mendoza after a draft visit and film session together, while new coach Klint Kubiak reiterated his preference for rookies to learn behind veterans.
With the 2026 NFL Draft two weeks away, the Raiders—who hold the No. 1 pick—are expected to take Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. Cousins confirmed Mendoza's Tuesday draft visit, saying, “We were able to watch film together. I think he'll be a great addition to the [QB] room.”
Emphasizing competition on merit, Cousins stated, “I honestly don't want to start unless I'm the best option, and I told [coach] Klint [Kubiak] that. The best player should play.” His familiarity with Kubiak's offense from their 2019-2021 time in Minnesota provides an advantage, while Mendoza transitions to pro-style play.
Kubiak, who last week expressed a desire for rookies to sit initially, aligns with this approach. Cousins, on his $20 million deal, is ready to mentor: “I think he's going to have a great future in our league.”
Raiders minority owner Tom Brady swayed Cousins via FaceTime: “That was a really life-giving call with Tom. He gets it.” This echoes Cousins' Atlanta stint, where the Falcons drafted Michael Penix Jr. soon after his 2024 signing.
