Local authorities report that over 20,000 jacaranda trees have been planted throughout Kunming. The peak blooming period runs from late April to mid-May each year.
Hundreds of the trees line Jiaochang Middle Road for two kilometers, their canopies forming a sea of purple blossoms. Gentle winds send bluish-purple petals fluttering down to carpet the street below.
The sky above and ground below are both awash in shades of purple, giving walkers the sense of entering a fairy-tale scene. The annual display draws residents and visitors alike.
