President Claudia Sheinbaum and German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier confirmed that Mexico will sign the updated Global Agreement with the European Union in May during their meeting in Cancún, Quintana Roo. Both highlighted commercial opportunities and interest from German companies in investing in Mexico.
In Cancún, Quintana Roo, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum met with German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier, who was on his second official visit to the country accompanied by a business delegation. They discussed commercial and economic relations, scientific and technological cooperation, cultural ties, innovation, the international situation, and the need for world peace through strengthened multilateral organizations. Sheinbaum described the meeting as positive and praised Steinmeier's international experience, noting he has been Germany's president for nearly 10 years. Both confirmed that in May, they will sign the update to the Economic Partnership, Political Coordination and Cooperation Agreement between Mexico and the European Union, known as the Global Agreement. “You know that in May the commercial agreement with the European Union will definitely be signed, and there is great interest from German companies; there are nearly 2,000 German companies with investments in Mexico,” Sheinbaum said during her press conference. Steinmeier stated: “It is good that the Association Treaty between the European Union and Mexico is signed soon, next month in May. And the representatives of German companies also see it as positive.” Mexican Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente highlighted that over 2,100 German companies operate in Mexico, mainly in automotive, pharmaceutical, chemical, engineering, and manufacturing sectors, making Mexico Germany's top trading partner in Latin America. The agreement update aims to strengthen trade, investment, and economic cooperation both ways.
