On Saturday, January 10, 2026, during the Hershey Bears' Mites On Ice intermission segment at Giant Center in Hershey, Pennsylvania, a group of young players from the Central Penn Panthers Youth Ice Hockey Club engaged in a brawl. The children, padded up and including goalies, rushed toward each other and exchanged punches, with one player even striking a teammate. No officials intervened to stop the fight, and the crowd cheered as the chaos unfolded.
The skirmish occurred while Bears and Cleveland Monsters personnel were in the dressing rooms during the AHL matchup. Fan-recorded videos captured the event and went viral on social media that evening, even garnering a mention on "Hockey Night in Canada." Mite hockey involves players aged 8 and under, highlighting the unusual nature of the aggression displayed.
The Atlantic Amateur Hockey Association (AAHA) responded on Sunday, labeling the incident a "staged fight" and announcing an investigation. In a statement, the AAHA noted that neither it nor USA Hockey had sanctioned the Bears' Mites On Ice game. "Appropriate disciplinary action will be taken against those players and team officials involved with the staged fight," the organization said.
The Central Penn Panthers, based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and serving players aged 4 to 18, pledged an internal review. "The safety, well-being, and positive experience of all participants—especially our young players—are of the utmost importance," the club stated on its Facebook page.
The Hershey Bears, an AHL affiliate of the NHL's Washington Capitals, echoed these concerns. "What occurred during last night’s youth scrimmage... did not reflect the values of the sport or the standards we expect when young athletes are on the ice," the team said. The Bears committed to reviewing the matter and collaborating with partners to implement safeguards for future youth activities, emphasizing safety and the integrity of hockey.
This is not the first such occurrence at a Bears' Mites On Ice event; a similar fight happened on December 21, 2025. The Washington Capitals also host similar intermission games for mite players, including one on January 8, 2026, featuring captain Alex Ovechkin's son.
