Nike turns to chemical recycling for world cup uniforms

Athletes from 16 countries will wear uniforms made from recycled fabric at the World Cup in June. Nike says the outfits come from its first elite performance apparel produced entirely from textile waste using advanced chemical recycling. The move highlights both progress and limits in efforts to make fashion more sustainable.

Nike has partnered with Swedish firm Syre and U.S.-based Loop Industries to source circular polyester. The company aims to turn textile waste into new fabric for high-performance clothing. This approach seeks to address the fashion industry's heavy reliance on virgin polyester derived from fossil fuels.
