The national grid operator ordered a 1 GW cut from smaller generators on Sunday after reducing output at large plants.
The ONS activated its emergency cut plan on Sunday (7), limiting production from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to plants above 5 MW. The measure reached 1 GW, enough to supply about 500,000 homes, and marked the first time the operator suspended smaller generators. In the Northeast, cuts hit 11 GW on Sunday and 15 GW on Saturday. Distributed micro and mini generation capacity already exceeds 44 GW nationwide, raising overload risks on low-demand days. Sector associations call for storage incentives through batteries and time-varying tariffs. Aneel authorized smaller-plant suspensions in 2025 after ONS warnings about system risks.
