Tigames addresses AI suspicions for Zoopunk after Xbox reveal

Chinese developer Tigames has clarified that its upcoming action game Zoopunk was created by human artists, not generative AI, following suspicions sparked by its appearance in an Nvidia tech announcement. The game, starring rabbit protagonist Rayton, debuted at Microsoft's Xbox Partner Preview Event. It features AI only for player-generated content and has no confirmed release date.

Game Overview

Zoopunk is a fully 3D action game developed by Tigames, serving as a sequel to the studio's 2021 2.5D Metroidvania title FIST: Forged In Shadow Torch. It continues the story of Rayton, the rabbit hero, who navigates a post-apocalyptic sci-fi world on a motorbike while wielding dual energy swords against creature-like enemies. The reveal trailer showcased dynamic combat and exploration in this expanded universe of Torch City.

AI Controversy and Developer Response

Suspicions of heavy AI involvement emerged after Zoopunk featured prominently in an Nvidia video demonstrating generative AI for NPC interactions and spaceship customization via voice commands. The video highlighted potential for player-driven AI in games, leading some to question the trailer's authenticity.

Tigames quickly addressed these concerns in a statement to Eurogamer: "All our works are original creations and the culmination of our artists' hard work and dedication." The developer emphasized that AI is limited to assisting players with user-generated content, such as vehicle skins and clothing schemes, to support modding communities at lower costs. "AI serves as a tool to support players in secondary creations and in maintaining the mod community," the statement added.

Development and Platforms

Tigames shared on Steam that the team debated expanding the FIST world extensively before committing to Zoopunk. "We spent a long time debating our next step. Deep down, we knew we wanted to continue expanding the world of Torch City," the post read. The game remains in early development, with Tigames inviting player feedback to refine it. It is planned for PS5, Xbox, and PC, though no release window has been announced.
