The New York Yankees have acquired right-handed pitcher Angel Chivilli from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for minor league first baseman T.J. Rumfield. This move bolsters the Yankees' bullpen with a high-upside arm, while Rumfield joins the Rockies' first-base competition. The trade was announced on January 28, 2026.

On January 28, 2026, the New York Yankees announced the acquisition of 23-year-old right-hander Angel Chivilli from the Colorado Rockies, sending minor league first baseman T.J. Rumfield in return. Chivilli, who has spent the past two seasons in the majors with Colorado, brings a power arm to the Yankees' bullpen despite uneven results.

In 2025, Chivilli appeared in 43 relief games for the Rockies, posting a 1-5 record with a 7.06 ERA over 58.2 innings. He allowed 76 hits, 23 walks, and 13 home runs while striking out 43. Across 73 career major league appearances from 2024 to 2025, he compiled a 3-8 mark with one save and a 6.18 ERA in 90.1 innings, permitting 107 hits, 33 walks, and 20 home runs against 71 strikeouts. He also made 10 relief outings at Triple-A Albuquerque in 2025, going 0-1 with a 7.00 ERA in 9.0 innings.

Yankees general manager Brian Cashman expressed optimism about Chivilli's potential. "He’s a 23-year-old power arm that’s got a tool package that’s pretty exciting," Cashman said. "He’s got some flexibility, because there’s an option remaining in his profile. He’s got a year of service, some experience. He’s got a tremendous fastball, changeup and slider. I think there’s a lot to work with there."

The organization believes Chivilli's 43.5% whiff rate on offspeed and breaking pitches in 2025 signals upside, particularly outside the hitter-friendly confines of Coors Field. "We just think we've just added a really nice quality arm to an array of quality arms that we have," Cashman added. "As you know, you never have enough pitching."

Chivilli, a native of La Victoria, Dominican Republic, signed with Colorado as a non-drafted free agent in 2018. He will work with Yankees pitching coach Matt Blake and bullpen coach Preston Claiborne.

In exchange, the Yankees parted with Rumfield, their No. 22 prospect per MLB Pipeline. The 25-year-old left-handed hitter batted .285/.378/.447 with 16 home runs and 31 doubles in 138 games at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in 2025. Over five minor league seasons with the Phillies and Yankees, he has hit .271/.365/.431 with 52 home runs in 430 games. Originally drafted by Philadelphia in the 12th round out of Virginia Tech in 2021, Rumfield was acquired by New York on November 19, 2021, along with left-hander Joel Valdez for right-hander Nick Nelson and catcher Donny Sands. With the Rockies, he could compete for first-base duties following the club's departure from Michael Toglia in November.

To accommodate Chivilli on the 40-man roster, the Yankees designated outfielder Michael Siani for assignment. Siani had been claimed off waivers from the Dodgers on January 23.

Rumfield are generally neutral to cautiously optimistic among Yankees followers, praising Chivilli's high-velocity fastball, unique secondary pitches, and bullpen potential despite his 7.06 ERA in 2025. Some highlight the low cost and developmental upside. Skepticism focuses on his poor MLB performance. Rockies accounts view Rumfield's strong minor-league stats positively for their lineup.
