Brewers promote prospect Luis Lara to majors

The Milwaukee Brewers called up top prospect Luis Lara on Tuesday after he received the news the night before while playing on PlayStation.

Luis Lara, a 21-year-old switch-hitter from San Felipe, Venezuela, was promoted from Triple-A Nashville. He had signed a seven-year, $31 million contract with the Brewers in early June.

Lara learned of the move during a Monday night call from Triple-A manager Rick Sweet. The Brewers announced the promotion at the start of a doubleheader against the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.

As a corresponding move, outfielder Blake Perkins was optioned to Nashville. Lara, ranked as Milwaukee’s No. 4 prospect, will wear No. 18 and is expected to rotate in the outfield.

Brewers manager Pat Murphy said the team plans for Lara to stay in the majors. Lara expressed excitement about contributing and helping the team win.
