Cardinal Advincula leads Lord's Passion celebration on Good Friday

Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula led the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion at Manila Cathedral on Good Friday, April 3, 2026, at 3 p.m. The Archdiocese of Manila also called for special prayers for world peace amid ongoing wars in various regions. This responds to Pope Leo XVI's appeal for peace.

On Good Friday, April 3, 2026, Catholics gathered in churches to commemorate the crucifixion and death of Jesus Christ. The service included a retelling of the Passion of Christ, veneration of the cross, and reception of communion, often followed by traditional processions of images of Jesus, Mary, and saints.

Cardinal Jose Advincula, archbishop of Manila, presided over the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion at Manila Cathedral. The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Manila (RCAM) mandated a special intention for world peace in the General Intercessions of the Good Friday liturgy, as stated in a circular dated April 1.

Cardinal Advincula said this responds to Pope Leo XVI's Palm Sunday message highlighting the plight of Christians in the Middle East and others in global conflicts. He cited the Roman Missal and the document "Paschalis Solemnitatis," which allow a diocesan bishop to add intentions in cases of "grave public necessity."

Advincula stated, “Together, let us come in supplication to the foot of the Cross, and there bring the sighs of sorrow and the hopes for peace of all humanity. Through the intercession of Our Lady of Sorrows, may God grant us ‘peace through His Son’s blood on the Cross’ (Col 1:20).” He also referenced Benedictine theologian Anscar Chupungco on the intercessions as a key moment for the world's needs.
