Domestic helper arrested over newborn found dead in Hong Kong bin

A cleaner discovered the infant on Monday afternoon, and it was pronounced dead at hospital despite resuscitation efforts. The woman was detained in the Eastern district on Thursday and remains in custody.

A cleaner at Lee Theatre Plaza on Percival Street in Causeway Bay discovered the newborn boy—with umbilical cord still attached—in a rubbish bin inside a cubicle of the women's restroom at The Starview Chinese restaurant at 2.10pm on Monday. Paramedics rushed the unconscious infant to Ruttonjee Hospital, where he was pronounced dead despite resuscitation efforts. No identification was found at the scene. Wan Chai district crime squad officers arrested the 34-year-old Indonesian domestic helper in the Eastern district on Thursday on suspicion of concealing a child's birth. She remains in custody for questioning, according to South China Morning Post. The case has been classified as infanticide and is under investigation by the crime squad.
