Estranged husband charged with first-degree murder of PBS engineer

Joshua Orlando, 29, faces charges of first-degree murder for shooting his 25-year-old estranged wife, Ivy Unruh, at a Wichita apartment complex on April 17. Unruh, a broadcast engineer at PBS Kansas and former U.S. Marine, died from her injuries on April 20. Orlando remains in custody on $1.5 million bond.

On the morning of April 17, just after 8 a.m., police responded to reports of a shooting at the Remington Apartments on East 37th Street North in Wichita, Kansas. Officers from the Wichita Police Department, Bel Aire Police Department and Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office found Unruh suffering from a gunshot wound to her upper body near Building 5. A firearm was discovered at the scene, according to a Wichita Police Department press release, and Unruh was rushed to a hospital before succumbing to her injuries three days later on April 20. Sedgwick County court records show Orlando was arrested at the complex, initially charged with aggravated battery, then rebooked for murder after Unruh's death. His case was presented to the district attorney's office on April 21, with formal charges filed and a first court appearance on April 22. He is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on May 5. Unruh worked as a broadcast engineer at PBS Kansas, where colleagues described her as motivated, trustworthy and intelligent. PBS Kansas President Victor Hogstrom told KAKE-TV he was shocked by the news: 'I heard about it and I was first informed, and the first thing I did was slam the desk with my two hands — bang, what? That was my reaction. I couldn't believe it.' Her family launched a GoFundMe fundraiser noting her Marine Corps service and past experience with domestic violence. 'She had the courage to walk away from a dangerous situation, yet tragically, her life was still taken,' the page states. Investigators are treating the case as domestic violence.
