Rush-Bassist Geddy Lee hat offenbart, dass er sich anfangs dagegen gewehrt hatte, den Hit Tom Sawyer auf das 1981 erschienene Album Moving Pictures aufzunehmen. Trotz der Schwierigkeiten bei der Aufnahme wurde das Stück zu einem der Markenzeichen der Band.

In einem Interview mit Rick Beato auf YouTube erklärte Lee die Herausforderungen während der Produktion. Er gab an, dass jeder Schritt bei der Aufnahme des Songs mit Problemen verbunden war, und beschrieb es als sehr schwierig, ihn zu produzieren und abzumischen. Lee fügte hinzu, dass er am Ende so überdrüssig des Titels war, dass er ihn nicht auf dem Album haben wollte.
