Antoine Griezmann received an emotional tribute in his final home match for Atlético de Madrid. The team won 1-0 against Girona thanks to a goal from Lookman assisted by the Frenchman.
The Metropolitano experienced an emotional day this Sunday. Griezmann, who is leaving after 500 matches and 212 goals with the club, was applauded before, during and after the game. Koke handed him the captain’s armband and several former captains such as Fernando Torres and Diego Godín took part in the farewell ceremony.
The match was decided by a goal from Ademola Lookman in the first half. The Nigerian forward finished after a precise assist from the Frenchman, who also created several chances but could not score in his final home fixture. Girona, which must beat Elche next weekend to stay up, suffered the defeat and moved closer to relegation.
After the final whistle, Griezmann became emotional listening to messages from teammates and coach Diego Simeone. “I ask for forgiveness again, I did not realise how much affection I had”, the player said in tears as a giant banner reading “Gracias Antoine” waved in the stands.
