Hong Kong hits 12°C low on Sunday but warmer week ahead

Hong Kong's temperature dropped to 12°C on Sunday morning, influenced by the northeast monsoon, with cold conditions expected to persist until Monday. The Hong Kong Observatory stated that the monsoon will be replaced by an easterly airstream mid-week, pushing temperatures up to 24°C by Friday. Sunday's temperatures ranged from 12 to 17°C, with a cold weather warning in effect.

Hong Kong experienced a cold snap on Sunday, with morning temperatures dipping to 12°C (54°F), driven by the northeast monsoon. The Hong Kong Observatory reported on Sunday that this weather pattern will keep Guangdong cold through Sunday and Monday.

The Observatory stated: “Under the influence of the northeast monsoon, it will be cold over Guangdong today and tomorrow.” Sunday's temperatures were forecast to range from 12 to 17°C, under a cold weather warning. Skies were mainly cloudy, with possible light rain and sunny intervals in the afternoon.

A Saturday forecast had predicted lows of about 13°C in urban areas and a couple of degrees lower in the New Territories, with a maximum of 18°C on Sunday. The forecaster added: “With the monsoon being replaced by an easterly airstream, temperatures will rise over the coast of Guangdong in the middle and latter part of the week.” By Friday, mercury is expected to reach 24°C.

This brief chill serves as a reminder for residents to stay warm, though warmer conditions are anticipated later in the week. Temporary cold shelters may be available through the Home Affairs Department if needed.
