Hong Kong police arrest 991 in illegal gambling crackdown during World Cup

Hong Kong police arrested 991 people and uncovered HK$365 million in betting records during a June and July crackdown on illegal gambling linked to the World Cup.

Hong Kong police announced on Tuesday that the operation targeted illegal gambling activities surrounding the World Cup and included raids on 249 premises.

Officers arrested 645 men and 346 women aged between 16 and 93. Suspects face charges including bookmaking, betting, operating illegal gambling establishments and money laundering.

The force seized about HK$3 million in cash, HK$4.4 million in valuables, 43 computers and 443 mobile phones. Police also ran preventive education campaigns to combat illegal gambling.
