The only woman still hospitalized from the January 18 Adamuz (Córdoba) train crash has given birth to a boy in good health at Málaga's Hospital Regional Universitario. She is Raquel, sister of Ana García, who was seriously injured while protecting her dog during the derailment. The baby is born nearly four months after the tragedy that killed 46 people.
Raquel, the only patient still admitted to the ICU at Málaga's Hospital Regional Universitario following the January 18 Adamuz accident, gave birth on Saturday to a boy who is in good health, according to sources from the Junta de Andalucía and the Servicio Andaluz de Salud.
The derailment of the Iryo train bound for Madrid, which crashed into an Alvia from Madrid to Huelva, resulted in 46 deaths. Raquel, five months pregnant at the time, suffered a severe traumatic brain injury while bending down to protect her dog Boro in carriage 7. Her sister Ana García recounted on television: “Aprovecho para buscar a mi perro. Por favor, si podéis ayudar a buscar a los animales, que son familia también”.
Andalusian hospitals treated 126 people, including five children. All have been discharged except Raquel; another victim, Patricia, died on January 30, bringing the toll to 46. The dog Boro was found four days later thanks to Seprona and volunteers.
Meanwhile, survivors and victims' families have formed an association demanding an investigation into the emergency health management in the first hours of the disaster.
