Marcos under medical observation after discomfort — Palace

President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is under 'medical observation' after experiencing discomfort, according to Palace Press Officer Claire Castro on Thursday, January 22. He missed an awarding ceremony, represented by Executive Secretary Ralph Recto. His condition remains stable and he continues to work.

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. is currently under "medical observation" after experiencing “discomfort,” according to Palace Press Officer Claire Castro on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

Marcos was supposed to attend the Outstanding Young Men 2025 Awarding Ceremony but was suddenly absent. Executive Secretary Ralph Recto represented him.

“The president spent the night under medical observation as a precautionary measure after experiencing discomfort. His doctors advised rest and monitoring, and his condition remains stable,” Castro said in a press briefing.

“The president continued to carry out his responsibilities while under medical observation and has returned to Malacañang,” she added.

The Palace did not specify what the discomfort was, but reassured the public that he was able to work. Marcos is scheduled to have two private meetings within the day, Castro said.

The president is fairly consistent when attending events and meetings, only rarely canceling appearances due to emergencies, including illnesses. Marcos has had at least three known bouts with COVID-19.

This announcement comes amid his official duties, highlighting his dedication to responsibilities even under medical care.
