Marlins edge Dodgers 3-2 on game-ending double play

The Miami Marlins defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 on Wednesday at Dodger Stadium, clinching their first series win there since 2018 with an unconventional unassisted double play in the ninth inning. Second baseman Xavier Edwards chased down Shohei Ohtani off the baseline and tagged first base to end the game. The victory came after recent losses and an injury to closer Pete Fairbanks.

In the bottom of the ninth, with the Marlins leading 3-2, Dodgers batters Hyeseong Kim and Alex Call walked to start the inning. Alex Freeland's sacrifice bunt advanced the winning run to third, prompting Marlins manager Clayton McCullough to intentionally walk Ohtani with first base open. Freddie Freeman then hit a soft grounder to Edwards at second base, who fielded it and sprinted to first as Ohtani retreated to avoid a tag on the potential tying run, Kim, charging from third. Edwards tagged Ohtani out of the baseline for the second out before touching first to retire Freeman, securing the improbable double play. The Dodgers challenged the call, but it was upheld, preventing Kim's run from counting due to the force play order. 'Definitely a lot of instinct,' Edwards said.
