Nebraska utility selects potential sites for new nuclear plant

The Nebraska Public Power District has identified four communities as possible locations for a new nuclear power plant. Local residents in the areas appear largely supportive, in contrast to past opposition to wind and solar projects.

The Nebraska Public Power District announced the shortlist of sites last month. Gage County, along with areas near Beatrice, Sutherland, Norfolk, and Brownville, are under consideration.

Larry Allder, a Gage County resident who previously led opposition to wind turbines, said he supports the nuclear proposal. “I think that’s a great idea. I like nuclear energy,” he said, citing its efficiency and smaller land footprint.

Leaders in the other communities reported similar openness. Madison County Commissioner Troy Uhlir noted growing but limited opposition, while Sutherland village board chairman Scott Meyer said safety questions can be addressed through education.

NPPD CEO Tom Kent said the utility received more than $27 million in federal funding to pursue a siting permit. The process could take a decade, he added, as the utility evaluates both small modular reactors and larger designs.

Documents indicate Google plans to operate one of the largest data centers in the United States in southeast Nebraska, powered by a Tenaska natural gas plant that could generate up to 3,000 megawatts. The project, which may incorporate carbon capture technology, hinges on a state bill allowing private power plants to connect to the public grid. Tenaska has secured options on over 2,600 acres for the site.

Otoe County officials voted last month to suspend permits for new data centers for as long as one year. The move follows resident concerns about water use, electricity costs, and potential heat impacts from the facilities.

Site work has officially begun on a new $250 million Tesla Megapack battery energy storage facility in Western Australia. The project, known as the Neoen Muchea Battery, aims to bolster the state's energy reliability and support its shift to renewables. The development was announced on social media by Tesla news reporter Sawyer Merritt.

Ratepayers of the Salt River Project in Arizona will vote on Tuesday for half of the utility's 14 board seats, in a contest between clean energy advocates and pro-fossil fuel backers. The election could shift control toward more solar, batteries and nuclear power amid rising demand from data centers and growth. The unique one-acre-one-vote system limits participation to landowners.

Tesla is constructing a $250 million battery energy storage system using Megapack units in Reno, Nevada. The facility will include 256 units arranged in 16 clusters. Sawyer Merritt first reported the project on April 3, 2026.

Policy changes by the Trump administration have halted federal grants for rural solar energy and tightened tax credit deadlines, derailing projects for farmers and developers. The USDA's REAP program has awarded no grants or loans this fiscal year, leaving many in limbo. Farmers report lost opportunities to cut energy costs amid thin margins.
