President Ruto orders bandits to surrender guns in Narok

President William Ruto has ordered residents in Narok County's Angata Barikoi to surrender their guns following deadly clashes that have claimed at least seven lives. Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot pleaded for the deployment of special forces to the area. Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen has declared several areas as security-disturbed for 30 days.

Deadly clashes in Angata Barikoi, Trans Mara, at the border of Narok County have claimed at least seven lives and torched more than 120 houses. Border communities have been skirmishing, with the Kenya Red Cross Society stating that children, women, and persons with disabilities are most affected, and food stores have been destroyed by fire.

President Ruto, speaking at the Baringo Cultural Festival and Kimalel Goat Auction on December 22, 2025, vowed to end the conflict. “These people have to return the guns to the police. If they don't, they will face it,” Ruto declared. He added, “We must stop criminals, terrorists and all others who are infringing on the peace and security of other citizens. And we are not begging.”

Moments earlier, Senate Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot urged Ruto to deploy special forces. “I have heard that there are special forces who deal with bandits; the same bandits who were in Baringo have now gone to Angata Barikoi. Please send the special forces to deal with the bandits there,” Cheruiyot said.

Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen issued a Gazette Notice on December 19, 2025, declaring 14 areas as security-disturbed for 30 days, including Kilgoris, Ang'ata Barrikoi, Lolgorian town, Mogondo, Keyian, Kirindon, Olderkesi, Nkararo, Kapsasian, Kakemer, Ntimaru, Masurura, Kapsarok, Mogor, Nairagie Enkare, Maji Moto, and Naisoya. Security has been enhanced with additional officers deployed.

Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat announced a dusk-to-dawn curfew on December 20. Police have arrested a local MCA and another individual linked to the clashes. The government is engaging local leaders and elders to address root causes like land disputes and community tensions, aiming for reconciliation and lasting peace.
