India's leading private space company is on track to attempt its first orbital flight later this year. Skyroot Aerospace plans to launch the Vikram-1 vehicle within the next couple of months after completing final tests.
The Indian government opened its space sector to private companies in 2020, allowing firms to build and launch rockets using state facilities. This policy shift followed the growth of commercial space industries in the United States and China. Skyroot, founded in 2018, has emerged as the most advanced player in the new ecosystem.
