Tesla Model Y leads European car sales in September

The Tesla Model Y reclaimed the top sales spot in Europe for September, becoming the best-selling car overall despite increased competition from cheaper electric vehicles. It recorded 25,938 units sold, an 8.6 percent drop from the previous year but enough to outpace rivals like the Renault Clio.

In a competitive European market flooded with affordable electric vehicle options from domestic manufacturers, the Tesla Model Y fought back to claim the best-selling car title for September. According to Automotive News, the Model Y achieved 25,938 sales, marking an 8.6 percent decrease compared to September 2024. This performance secured its first monthly sales crown of the year, surpassing the Renault Clio, which took second place with 20,146 units.

Throughout 2025, the European EV sales rankings have seen dominance by non-Tesla models. The Renault Clio has won three monthly titles, the Dacia Sandero four, and the Volkswagen T-Roc claimed the top spot in August. As a result, the Model Y has not ranked in the top three EVs for the year so far, with the Sandero, Clio, and T-Roc leading overall.

Despite these challenges in Europe, the Model Y remains a global powerhouse. It has been the best-selling car worldwide for the past two years, outpacing both gas and EV competitors. Tesla anticipates it will be among the top-selling vehicles globally in 2025, if not the leader. The company's recent performance underscores this strength: Tesla delivered just shy of 500,000 vehicles from July to September, its best three-month sales period in history.

In regions like the United States and China, the Model Y continues to dominate EV charts, buoyed by its premium design, technology features, and appeal amid fiercer competition in China.
