UCLA researchers develop mineral sunscreen with reduced white cast

Scientists at UCLA have engineered a new form of zinc oxide for mineral sunscreens that delivers SPF 30 protection while leaving less noticeable residue on skin. The approach reshapes particles into microscopic tetrapods to address a common barrier to regular use.

The study, published in ACS Materials Letters, focused on changing the physical structure of zinc oxide rather than developing new chemical ingredients. Standard particles often clump and scatter visible light, creating a white or gray film that is especially noticeable on darker skin tones.

Researchers led by Paul S. Weiss and first author AJ Addae tested the tetrapod-shaped particles in laboratory and skin-application experiments. The formulas remained stable over time and produced a warmer appearance closer to natural skin tones without added pigments.

Weiss said improving sunscreen appearance could encourage consistent use and support skin cancer prevention. Addae noted personal frustration with existing products as motivation for the work, which also involves collaboration with UCLA Health dermatology.

Further testing is required before commercial availability, according to the researchers.
