Van der Valk launches largest superyacht Shine

Dutch shipyard Van der Valk has launched its largest superyacht to date, the 39.9-metre Shine, formerly known as Project Evo. The all-aluminium vessel hit the water in Waalwijk, Netherlands, marking a milestone for the builder with over 60 years of experience. Following sea trials, Shine is set for delivery in the summer.

The launch ceremony for Shine took place at Van der Valk's facilities in Waalwijk, attended by the owners, craftsmen, design and engineering representatives, the owner's representative, Thom Conboy—who introduced the owners to the shipyard—and other project team members.

Commissioned by experienced owners of high-performance yachts, Shine was designed as a bespoke blue-water cruiser for family use. The project started with a 36-metre preliminary concept from SFG Design, inspired by Franco Gianni and Doga Naz Cebeci from Fancy by Dada. Cristiano Gatto Design developed the general arrangement, interior, and sporty exteriors, expanding it to 39.9 metres. Naval architecture came from Ginton Naval Architects and Diana Yacht Design, incorporating a round-bilged, fast-displacement hull with a high, raked bow.

Cristiano Gatto, founder of his eponymous design firm, explained: “The project began with a preliminary concept of around 36 metres based on a profile drawn by SFG Design... We met during the Palm Beach International Boat Show in March 2023... from there we were able to shape the concept into the 40-metre yacht she is today.” He added: “The goal was not simply to build a boat. The owner wanted a micro-megayacht built to the same standards as a 60- or 70-metre project. The result exceeded my expectations.”

The yacht's interior features around 78 materials, including ebony wood and fine leathers, with custom furniture creating a sophisticated dialogue with the exterior. Shine has a beam of 8.5 metres, a volume of 370 GT, and accommodates 10 guests in an owner's suite on the main deck and four cabins on the lower deck, plus crew quarters. Highlights include a transformer swim platform, two drop-down balconies, and a bow Jacuzzi.

Powered by twin MTU 16V 2000 engines, Shine reaches a top speed of around 20 knots and cruises at 19 knots, with a range of 2,200 nautical miles. It meets ABS class and IMO Tier III emissions standards. Challenges included beam restrictions for canal locks and unrestricted navigation, addressed through computational fluid dynamics and outboard rudders, as noted by Jaron Ginton of Ginton Naval Architects.

Yoeri Bijker, commercial director at Van der Valk, stated: “Shine stands out as a refined and highly capable 40-metre yacht... As the largest yacht launched by Van der Valk to date, she reflects the skill and dedication of every department within our shipyard.” The shipyard currently has four yachts in build, including the upcoming 47.8-metre Project Zen.
