WJSN's Dayoung discusses new single and rising confidence

Dayoung, the youngest member of K-pop girl group WJSN, said in a recent interview that the success of her solo debut single 'body' boosted her confidence. She introduced her second digital single 'What's a Girl to Do,' set for release on Tuesday, highlighting pop and R&B influences. In the interview at Starship Entertainment headquarters, she expressed gratitude for her group experiences.

Dayoung of WJSN quietly debuted solo last September with the album 'gonna love me right?' and its lead single 'body.' "I really thought only my mom and I would buy my album," she recalled, fearing unsold copies would pile up in storage. Instead, 'body' gained viral momentum through its energy and her raw delivery, leading to a second album opportunity.

"After 'body,' I started to love myself more," Dayoung said, with her confidence rising from zero to about 70 percent. Her new single 'What's a Girl to Do,' releasing Tuesday, shifts from daytime party vibes to a nighttime mood from 6 p.m. to 4 a.m. It explores emotional contradictions in romance, urging listeners to embrace altered selves when liking someone.

Debuting with WJSN in 2016, she credits a decade of group experience, including the bubbly subunit WJSN CHOCOME, for preparing her solo path. "I've always liked pop and R&B," she noted, viewing this as revealing her true self after years of fitting team concepts. She remains grateful for her members, like sisters, and Starship Entertainment.

The track targets clubs and university festivals, a stage she now approaches confidently. "I want to keep showing that I can grow," Dayoung stated. The interview took place Thursday at Starship Entertainment headquarters in Seoul's Gangnam District.
