Writer Fernando Cabeza Quiles dies in bicycle accident in Carballo

Galician writer Fernando Cabeza Quiles, 73, died on Friday in Carballo, A Coruña, after falling from his bicycle. The incident happened at kilometer 1 of the DP-1914 road, according to CIAE 112 Galicia. No other vehicles were involved.

Fernando Cabeza Quiles, a 73-year-old philologist and retired professor born in Ponferrada, died in a bicycle accident in Carballo, A Coruña. The first call to 112 came around 1 p.m. on Friday, reporting a cyclist's fall on a steep hill at kilometer 1 of the DP-1914 road.

CIAE 112 promptly alerted Urxencias Sanitarias de Galicia-061, Guardia Civil de Tráfico, and Carballo's municipal Protección Civil. Upon arrival, emergency teams could only confirm the writer's death, with no other vehicles involved.

Tributes poured in, including from the Asociación de Escritoras e Escritores en Lingua Galega. Writer and former deputy Miguel Anxo Fernán Vello, a close friend, posted on social media: «Abatido por la vida, ahora solo me queda el deber de tenerte siempre presente, mientras tenga aliento, a través de tu inmensa labor de investigación toponímica y literaria».

Cabeza Quiles was renowned for his work on Galician toponymy but also wrote essays, short stories, poetry, and hundreds of articles on ethnographic, historical, and social themes. He lived in A Estrada, Ribeira, Vigo, and finally Carballo.
