China's 2025 autumn grain purchases reach recent high ahead of summer harvest

China purchased more than 338 million metric tons of autumn grain from the 2025 harvest season by the end of April, one of the highest levels in recent years. Official data released on Sunday showed the peak purchasing season concluded then. Grain quality was generally good with stable prices.

Luo Shouquan, head of the grain reserve department at the National Food and Strategic Reserves Administration, confirmed the figures. Preliminary data indicated purchases of 103 million metric tons of mid- and late-season rice, 222 million metric tons of corn and 12.99 million tons of soybeans.

High-quality rice sold above 3,200 yuan per metric ton, more than 600 yuan higher than ordinary varieties. High-protein soybeans exceeded 5,000 yuan per metric ton. Provinces including Henan, Hunan and Heilongjiang activated minimum purchase price programs and bought 4.18 million metric tons of rice under the policy.

Authorities are preparing for the 2026 summer grain procurement season to maintain stable markets and reasonable prices.
